We recognise that our families come from diverse cultural backgrounds and we value the individual skills and understandings that each child brings to this kindergarten setting.

We believe that open communication and partnerships with parents and the community is central to providing the best possible outcomes for your child. The staff are always available to parents if you have any concerns or queries about your child’s development, the program or the kindergarten in general

Play

The program at Barker Kindergarten values play as an essential aspect of learning for young children. We, as early childhood educators respond to children’s play ideas and endeavour to establish an environment that supports and extends children’s learning and development through play based activities.

Play allows your child to make sense of his/her world.

In our program, the children are engaged in active learning through a variety of play experiences and these allow them to construct, test and apply their developing knowledge. The staff evaluate play experiences through observations, checklists and conversations with children. Records are kept an all children’s development and these are used to program and plan for individual children’s learning experiences. Child Portfolios are collated for all children along with a Summative Report on completion of their year at kindergarten. The core business of Barker Kindergarten is to provide a safe and stimulating play environment supported by a complimentary program based on the SACSA Framework.

SACSA Framework

Kindergarten and school programs are guided by the SACSA Framework which provides for a holistic approach to childrens’ education. It recognises that we live in a rapidly changing world and that individuals will need to develop a range of capabilities and personal resources to enable them to become thoughtful, active and productive members of their community.

This life long learning approach focuses on five essential areas:

  1. Identity – to develop a positive sense of self and group belonging
  2. Interdependence – to work in harmony with others.
  3. Communication – to communicate effectively and powerfully.
  4. Thinking – to be independent and innovative thinkers.
  5. Futures – to develop the flexibility to respond to changes, to maximise opportunities and to play a part in shaping the future.
